2011 Lake-Friendly Development Awards

Living in the extraordinary Brainerd Lakes Area comes with many benefits, including stunning scenery and a bounty of recreation opportunities. However, these privileges come with a responsibility to take care of the land and water we call home. It is in this spirit that the Lake-Friendly Development Awards were initiated in 2003. The brainchild of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and Brainerd Lakes Area environmental organizations, the awards are intended to highlight and promote efforts to develop lake and river land in an ecologically responsible way.

October 20th, 2011 marked the 9th annual Lake-Friendly Development Awards, in which five local projects were recognized for their efforts in three distinct award categories.

The Lake-Friendly Protection Strategy Award is given to an organization that supports the preservation of the area’s lake and river systems through the creation of a particular regulatory action. The recipients:

  • Crow Wing County—for its revision of shoreland ordinances, effectively raising the minimum standards for new shore-level developments in the county.
  • 2011 Land and Water Tour on Lake Margaret—for educating local ranchers and lakeshore land owners on how they can reduce their pollution impact on the lake.
  • Lakes and Farm Harvest Dinner—for its promotion of land stewardship through an annual celebration that brings together ranchers, farmers, and lakefront dwellers.

The Lakescaping Award is given to individuals who use indigenous vegetation and natural materials in the landscaping of their lake or river property, going above and beyond minimum shoreland regulations. The recipients:

  • Jeff and Sharon Herwig on Sorenson Lake—for fostering the growth of indigenous plants, restoring what was removed by the previous owners of their home.

The Lake-Friendly Home Construction Award recognizes shoreland property owners or developers who make significant efforts to preserve sensitive river or lake ecology during construction or major reconstruction. The recipients:

  • Geoff and Martha Davidge on Lower Whitefish Lake—for making their lakefront property as low-impact as possible, effectively creating a wildlife habitat, with native plants and rain gardens.
